BETHLEHEM, PA – The annual Patriot League Football Media Day took place Wednesday at Green Pond Country Club and the inaugural Preseason All-League Team was announced with three Bison showing up on the list. Senior RB Tyler Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn), senior LB Beau Traber (Norman, Okla./Norman North) and junior FB Travis Friend (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) were among the 28 total players recognized.

Voting for the Preseason All-League Teams was conducted by the Patriot League’s head coaches and football sports information directors. Lehigh WR Ryan Spadola was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Georgetown LB Robert McCabe was voted the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

A First Team All-Patriot League selection in 2011, Smith enters his senior campaign just 298 rushing yards shy of 10th place on Bucknell’s all-time list. The Patriot League’s leading rusher with a career-high 795 yards last fall, Smith posted back-to-back 200-yard outings against Lafayette and Fordham. The 416 rushing yards in back-to-back games is the highest two-game rushing total in program history.

A versatile player, Smith ranks seventh on Bucknell’s career all-purpose yards list with 3,399. He ranked 12th nationally, and led the Patriot League, with an average of 146.27 all-purpose yards per game last year. It marked his second straight year ranking in the top 25 nationally in that category. Smith totaled a career-high 1,609 yards in 2011.

Traber finished third on the team with a career-high 63 tackles last season in his first year as part of the starting unit. He was also third on the squad in tackles for loss (11.5) and sacks (3.0). The Oklahoma native was especially strong down the stretch, recording 7.5 tackles for loss in the season’s final four games. Traber enters his final season with 80 career tackles and 27 games of experience.

A two-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection, Friend has been used mainly as a blocker and receiver during his first two years as a Bison. He has caught 34 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown in his career, including 16 for 100 yards last season. The experienced junior has played in all 22 games since he stepped on campus in 2010 and has earned 18 starts.

Also announced at Media Day was the league’s preseason poll. The Bison were picked to finish sixth. Defending champion Lehigh garnered 11 of the 14 first-place votes and was predicted to repeat. Holy Cross, Colgate, Georgetown and Lafayette rounded out the list. Holy Cross (1) and Georgetown (2) made it three teams with first-place votes.

Bucknell will open preseason camp Aug. 7. The season opener is Sept. 8 at Marist. The home opener is Sept. 22 against Lafayette and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
