LEWISBURG, PA – With less than a week until Bucknell field hockey opens its 2012 campaign, the Bison were selected third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll on Monday. Juniors Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) and Vickie Resh (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) were also voted to the inaugural Field Hockey Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

Misko and Resh took two of the 11 spots on the first-ever Preseason All-Patriot League Team. Ten of the 11 members, including both Bison, were also All-Patriot League selections at the end of last fall. Misko was a unanimous First Team honoree in 2011. The forward started all 20 games for Bucknell and was second on the squad in points (13) and goals (4) and third in assists (5). She returns in 2012 as the team’s top scorer.

Resh, who was called to the Junior National Squad last week, was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection last year. The midfielder has been a key member of Bucknell’s defensive effort the last two years, but she also tallied her first career goal in an overtime win against Lock Haven last season.

Thanks in part to Misko and Resh’s efforts, Bucknell was selected third with 33 points in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. The Bison trailed American, which was picked first with 47 points and seven first-place votes. Lafayette was close behind in second with 45 points and five first-place votes. The top three teams provided a thrilling conference tournament last November. Fourth-seeded Bucknell upset No. 1 American on its home field in the semifinals. The Bison then played Lafayette in the championship game but fell 3-1.

Completing the preseason poll was Lehigh in fourth (24 points), followed by Colgate (19) and Holy Cross (12). The poll and preseason team were both selected by vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors who cannot vote for their own team or players.

Bucknell finished last year 8-12 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison open their season on Saturday when they take on Connecticut, which finished the 2011 season ranked No. 5 nationally, in Storrs, Conn., at 12 p.m. The weekend action continues on Sunday at Fairfield for a 1 p.m. matchup with Stags. Bucknell’s home opener is slated for Sunday, Sept. 2 with Lock Haven. Play at Graham Field begins at noon.
