CLARION, PA – Alyssa Katz and Cassaundra Soars each scored second-half goals to lead the Clarion University women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Millersville in the PSAC opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon at Clarion’s Memorial Stadium.

Clarion (1-0-1, 1-0 PSAC), which played Alderson-Broaddus to a scoreless tie in the season opener Saturday, found the scoreboard for the first time in 2012 midway through the second half when Katz scored from about 12 yards out from the far sideline after taking a pass from Crystal Miller in the 68th minute.

The game remained 1-0 until late in the 90th minute when Soars, a freshman, scored her first career goal after Millersville had pulled its goalie up trying to the tie game.

About 10 minutes before Soars’ game clincher, Clarion goalkeeper Laura Saussol came up with a key save on a Millersville corner kick. She stopped a Kelsey Mattola shot despite being in a collision with a Millersville player in a scramble in front of the goal after the corner. It was the third of three straight corner kicks in a span of a 1:30 for the Marauders (2-1, 0-1).

Both teams had 15 shots in the game with Mackenzie Stover leading Clarion with three. Sara Cressman and Emily Parcell each had three for Millersville.

Saussol made eight saves for the Golden Eagles in getting her first win of 2012, while Olivia Weber made six stops in a losing effort for Millersville.

It marked the second time in three years Clarion has started PSAC play 1-0 and improves the Golden Eagles record to 4-8 all-time in PSAC openers including wins in four of the last seven PSAC openers.

Clarion returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wheeling Jesuit.
